Pedalling generates healthy fat
26 June 2013............ This study was looking at the effect of physical activity on fat.
The humans-on-bikes phase of the research followed a substantial study on mice. Mice that had run on a wheel for 70km over 11 days were found to have undergone a number of beneficial changes. The researchers found when they transplanted the subcutaneous fat (the layer of fat under the skin) to sedentary mice, the sedentary mice benefited from the ‘healthy’ transplanted fat.
The researchers found that the under-skin fat on the pedalling humans had undergone similar beneficial changes to the subcutaneous fat on the running mice. It appears that physical activity makes your under-skin fat healthier.
Laurie Goodyear the lead researcher said "Our results showed that exercise doesn't just have beneficial effects on muscle, it also affects fat. It's clear that when fat gets trained, it becomes browner and more metabolically active. We think there are factors being released into the bloodstream from the healthier fat that are working on other tissues."
Steven Smith MD the Scientific Director of Florida Hospital, Sanford-Burnham Translational Research Institute commented for MedPage Today
‘Nobody has ever thought the muscle could communicate with the fat cells and then the fat cells could improve metabolic parameters, and I believe that’s really the new and novel piece here.’
‘When I talk to endocrinologists about exercising their patients with diabetes, they tend to be reluctant. Part of that has to do with the fact that it’s hard to get people to exercise. What this study says to endocrinologists is there is some science behind how exercise is working and they just need to urge patients with diabetes to exercise as much as possible.’
For those of us who don’t have diabetes the take home message is: make sure you put together 150 minutes of physical activity a week and, if you can, also enjoy some regular, vigorous activity for extra health and fitness.
