   Does anyone have any experience using Kristalbond as an alternative to Double Glazing when applied to the inside of existing residential windows?

   KristalBond is a liquid glass coating that shields against the sun’s harmful radiation with the latest advances in nanotechnology. It claims to be 3ºC - 10ºC Cooler in Summer, Up to 3ºC Warmer in Winter, Up to 20% Energy Savings of CO2 Greenhouse Emissions, Ultra Violet 99% Cut & Infrared Ray 90% Cut, 75% Visible Light Transmission and comes with 10 year warranty.

   It was exhibited at the recent Melbourne Herald Sun Home Show & Garden Expo, but I missed it. Here is a video interview from it:

   The specificity of the claims makes me suspicious of their offering. The performance of any product like this will be highly dependent on the conditions of the installation. If the company is making such claims then I would want to see them substatiated before considering them a serious alternative to double glazing.

   I have had smart glass by Pilkington installed in a house a few years ago and whilst it did help with UV and also to some degree of heat retention the claims did not match the reality and now, having now built another house that is 75% glass walled and all of it double glazed, there is no comparison, the double glaze wins hands down. I did experiment in another house with the glass gap width varying from 10 to 16mm and whilst I would have preferred 16mm, the builder messed up and installed 10mm gapped glass. Even so, there is a quantum leap from the smart glass to double glazed.

   Coatings reduce radiant transfer. Gaps stop convective transfer. Most of the winter losses are convective and most of the summer gains are radiant.

   We had Kristalbond put onto our windows and doors in our house back in October last year after also seeing it at the Home Show in Melbourne. We have 52.5m of glass and alot of it faces west and because we have a long home it was literally a "hot box" when we came home from work in summer. I have to say that we are experiencing some excellent results probably better than I expected. Our temperature overall in the home is constantly better when it is warm and even on the cooler days seems to be holding the heat better (we live in Bacchus Marsh so temp can vary a bit). We are not putting our aircon on as high, it doesnt seem to be struggling so much and moreso the fan not so high and for not on for as long. We would often have it on during the night and now turn it off before going to bed. I did invesitage it further after going to the home show as I was looking at the alternatives but didnt have a big enough budget and didnt really want to change my windows or the look. It seems to have been around overseas since 2002 from what I can find on the internet but it a new product to Australia. Would not have known about until I went to the home show. Anyway I am more than happy with the product and my new curtains that I put in the living areas prior to christmas have also not faded which was my other objective.
