I need to buy a lawnmower and found that a 12v battery powered one is the same price as a 500cc 4 stroke one.
Has anybody owned one?
Are they as good as a petrol mower?
I used a electric mains powered one once and found them to be gutless a few years ago.
Has anything changed since then?

Can I just tell you about my neighbour, can I, can I?
She came with her Bunnings rechargeable mover and lifted it outta the boot of her Hyundai. It made it about 1 meter into the Kikuyu grass before it conked out terminally LOL. Within a few weeks the grass was replaced with plastic astroturf. The weeds are amazing and grow right through the astroturf LOL.
I reckon get a sheep or a goat. They are grass powered so you don't need to buy fuel, clean plugs or jerk starter cords.

Battery powered mowers need to be charged first!
Search on whirlpool forums, lots of info about them there.

Many of the battery powered mowers seem to be underpowered, not sure why, there's no reason for it. One of the best mowers I ever owned was the Black and Decker Stealth, they are hard to find nowadays, but lots of grunt. My current unit is an old husqvarna (article on a recent upgrade of it in the last ReNew), it cuts everything including grass up to a foot high, so long as I am sensible. By that I mean you don't just plow into long thick grass and expect miracles.
But as Russell says, you have to charge the things properly, and if you use them for cutting stuff they were not designed for then you will have probs. I have to admit, I do that with both of my rechargeables, the husqvarna and the Tandem Power ride-on, but they are still going because I know how far I can push them.
I'm waiting on the mower from Core Power, I have one of their line trimmers and the thing is awesome, it really is like a 25 or 30cc petrol unit. I have some spare batteries for it now and I can cut heavy grass (and by that I mean cattle fodder type grass up to a metre high) and I can do that for nearly 2 hours with 3 battery packs. They are about to release a lawnmower that uses 4 of their power packs (which they use in all their devices), if it's anything like the line trimmer then it will have serious power, see http://coreoutdoorpower.com/?post_type=portfolio&p=1833

I have a Bosch, it cuts the cooch grass very well, I abuse it routinely because the block is sitting on mainly stones, overfilled but will always be rough. It charges very quickly, it is magnificently maneouvrable and light weight. It is far narrower than most petrol mowers but still cuts almost as much in the same time due to its weight and maneouvrability. I've had it around a year and half (I think). So far very good.
The whole task of mowing the lawn is far easier with this mower than with the previous heavyweight monster. I think it's 36V and far more expensive than a cheap petrol, still worth it IMHO.

Corded electric mowers can be good in the right application too. No need to worry about batteries and plenty of watts available.

I thought about corded but running 30m of cord and I have a large nature strip on a busy pedestrian traffic road.
Hate to trip up an old lady with a cord over the footpath.I might go for petrol as I hate mowing lawns and I just want to get it over with as quickly as possible.
Thanks everyone for your comments.

Just bear in mind that petrol and related products are quite carcinogenic. It's less of a problem when you are filling the tank, but running a mower for an hour or more and breathing in the fumes has to have some effect. It's one of the main reasons I have no petrol powered machines except the car.
