Hi i know this chain is very old but hopefully one of you gets to read this.
before you jump to concludios on chlorine pools i will go through the other forms of sanitation.
before this though domeone mentioned chlorine being used during the war against enemies. This is true but it was chemically composed in a way where breathing it in created a reaction in the body which when bfeathed in turned the liquid in the lungs to hydrochloric acid. Therefore people died from acid eating their body away internally.
back to the point
salt water systems - they use salt water chlorinators. therefore the salt cell introduces a charge to the salt which leaves a reaction producing caustic soda, hydrogen gas and 'chlorine'. Therefore salt pools actually produce the chlorine instead of you adding it manually or by feeding system. There is the same anount of chlorine in a chlorinated pool as there is in a salt pool. But in the case of salt you now not only have a chlorine pool but you have the salt as well. The salt basically throws out what the llbuffer does to ph with regard to inhibiting acid and rusting of the pool. the salt will rust anything away high buffer levels or not. once a leak occurs in the pool system away the salt goes rusting anythinh in its path.your pool heater will rust if air present and your mechanical seal in your pool motor pumps will deteriorate much faster, mechanical seals are not under warranty. so a salt pool is just a chlorine pool with salt in it. and the salt will create compounds that no pool test measures. These can be in the form of scale of polymers or silicates and much more that the water board spend millions with the best scientists to eliminate from drinking water.
mineral pools - even worse. mineral pools not only use solar salt but use minerals such as magnesium and potassium. welcome to your own self made science experiment. mineral salt pools also have a cell that they call a hydroxinator. This 'hydroxinator' is another name for you guessed it, a chlorinator.
They say mineral salts are great as look at the health benefits of natural springs with minerals in them. what tou may also notice is the extreme amounts of calcification or chalky build up in those springs.these systems not only have the same amount of chlorine as a chlorine pool, but they have nonal solar salt corroding everything and magnesium and potassium chloride or sulfate crdating build up in all of your systems stuffing around chemivallly with the calcium carbonate in the pool, the watee hardness. ever tested for magnesium? sufates? potassium? i can go on.But ll in all all of them have exactly the same amount of chlorine in them.
Next is the ioniser. yes they kill bacteria but they do not sbitise the pool from viruses. Deadly viruses are unaffected by an ionised pool system and because of this chlorine still has to be added. in Australia an ionised pool still must have 2ppm of chlorine in the pool for adequate sanitation.
a cup of granular chlorine has 150grams of chlorine. That is equivalent to the amount of chlorine produced by a salt chlorinator during 20 hours of operation. so a cup of granular chlorine is significant in its amount of chlorine that it contributes. and in no way is it disappeared in a day as said by a previous post.
a normal chlorinates pool requires 3ppm of chlorine in the pool. an ionised pool requires 2ppm. so the difference in chlorine between them is 1ppm. or 3 litres of chlorine difference in a 50,000 litre pool. that is less than 1 litre per 15,000 litres of water. It is basically no difference. And 3ppm of chlorine in a pool is so little compared to the thousands of litres in the pool that side effects are near to none.
why people hate chlorine pools is that they smell. This is a belief first probably thought from the old school days going to public or olympic sizes pools smelling not chlorine but the chloramines in a pool. For their own public liability pools that are public do overdose their systems due to the high volumes of people using it. and people do not shower before hand bringing large quantities of ammonia into the pool. the ammonia connects to chlorine forming chloramines which create a awful smell. to elimainate the smell one actually needs to add even more chlorine to break the chemical bonds with ammonia. if a public pool was salt chlorinated you would get the same smell. chlorine is chlorine, whether you put it in, or it was produced by a salt chlorinator or mineral sal hydroxinator. And chlorine cannot be dismissed from an ionised pool. i dont think people realise that using copper in a pool will introduce rust if not monitored and drinking it by accident would not be too cool for the brain. why one would think the addition of metals yo the pool for the ioniser would be better than the small amount of chlorine you still must put in is beyond me.
a normal chlorine pool doesnt smell. it is sanitised tap water. still not wise to drink but those pools do not also come with magnesium, potassium, metals and salt that in certaun compounds can be a scientific mess to try to balance.
yes to stop pool going green use a starver to eliminate phosphates. algae use phosphates as their food source, eliminate the phosphates and therefore starve the algae.
if one believes peroxide or oxy actioning the pool is safer than chlorine you are wrong. i would not advise anyone drink chlorine nor anyone drink peroxide. both are deadly in high levels. peroxide just does not affect your ph levels. peroxide is also used in hair salons to turn your hair blonde, so same stuff different smell. would you drink oxy action washing detergent? didnt think so.
all in all people are deceived with gimmick after gimmick and while so many do not want to understand the pool, pool businesses can say anything and people will believe. If all systems require chlorine then just put in chlorine and save on the thousands of dollars of garbage out there. yes liquid chlorime can be expensive. But i can get 15 litres for 5 bucks US. so chlorine. so 250 bucks a year.
and ozone pools same thing. need chlorine. ozone is also an extremely deadly gas. one breath of ozone and you are dead. i will drink a glass of bleach (liquid chlorine) before breathing in pure ozone. it is better left in the upper atmosphere protecting us from the suns radioactive waves.
i didnt think much of chlorine when i first got into pool but after many years of study and working with pools it seems the simplest most effective sanitiser there is. and if dosed correctly in your pool will never smell or change your hair colour or cause rashes or asthma or neurological disorders. All the other methods have chlorine and they dont. welcome to the big scam of the pool industry.
