We have received in the mail an offer from an approved (?) company by the Govt that will replace your downlights for LED downlights at $10-00 each. Ages ago I looked at putting LED downlights in, to save on electricity usage, but was advised that I also needed to buy the transformer for each light and that made it too expensive to do. I am referring to 12volt LED lights. Does any one know about these lights on offer.
What I would like to know is :-
With 12 volt LED lights do they need a matching transformer.
Are they dimmable.
Or :-
Does any one know a reliable supplier as I would be interested in looking at the cost again.

I'd ignore the bit about "gov't approved".
You can buy 12V LED downlights for cheaper than $10 and also for more - its very hard to know which ones are reliable/best. Buy just a couple and try them.
I've tested an LED MR16 bulb (from Jaycar) in several halogen light fittings and its worked fine with the halogen transformer. Often the transformers do not need changing. Again the best way is to test one with your transformer.
Some LED MR16 are dimmable - ask this supplier if theirs are.
There's a very long post on LED GU10 bulbs here ...
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1951172&p=39I think there's mention of MR16 in there too.

This is a State based rebate & the fittings &/or LED lamps must be approved by the respective Authorising body within each state.
It sounds like another insulation debacle to me.

Benny -- had a loook at the "Whirlpool forum" site you referred to.
Thank you -- it is very informativePosted Tuesday 5 Mar 2013 @ 8:57:41 am from IP # -
what type of approval do this company have. doesn't sound right. Gov dont normally expose themselves to liability by rubber stamping individual contractor companies. be interesting to see the offer if you could post it

Changed my dining room lights from halogen to 13 watt floros and back to halogen as floros are not dimable and dull so cannot read the paper on winter mornings.
800 lumen leds are about 100 dollars each so for two lights, they are not worth buying for 40 mins use each day,
We have solar electricity so energy use is not an issue.Posted Monday 8 Apr 2013 @ 9:15:02 am from IP #
