I'm not familiar with household bottle gas, rate of usage and cost.
Can anyone give me an idea of what would be a 'standard' sort of usage rate of bottle gas for stove top cooking only - family of 3, Sydney.
Someone recently told me their gas bottle bill for one quarter - for hob only - was $300, and this seems extraordinary to me.

I live in SW WA and recently finished a 45kg LPG bottle ($100 delivered) that had lasted me since September 2009 (say 8 months) - this would have been for stove top cooking only, oven is electric - family of four cooking most nights. Coming into winter we will also use a gas / electric heater for some short morning periods so we may go through another bottle in the next 4 - 6 months. So, on average, maybe two bottles a year ($200).

In Adelaide Hills SA it was $100/45 kg bottle + $30 rental. We have using the same bottle for 12 months.
45 kg LPG bottle = 630 kWh = 175 MJ
So we must be using less than 1MJ/day. This is the same when we were on natural gas.
But natural gas is about a quarter the cost.
A domestic gas cook-top output varies between 1-15 MJ/hr (simmer to wok burner).
A $300 gas bill suggest they have something simmering 4 hours per day.

Oops you are right. times 3.6 not divide 3.6.
They must have the cooktop on 24/7 or its leaking.

Natural gas is not so cheap when you use just a little. My last bill: 3.7MJ/day, 104 days. 384MJ
Gas - $7.81, Total bill with service charge and GST $67.18 Equivalent to $335 per 45kg bottle

But that's true of all utilities when consumption is low. Most of our telephone bill is service/line charges.

Think that's bad? My most recent electricity bill was $158 for access fees and $113 for actual electricity used.
I have three meters and one of them needs to be connected but is registering little or no usage, but cost me $73 in access fees.
Once the renovating in the old bit is finished I'll be getting that meter switched into the (future) tenant's name, so won't be a issue, but right now it's painful.
