I have recently purchased some batteries over the internet on ebay. When I received them I did not get any instructions or specifications with them. Is there any way I can tell if they are Lifepo4 batteries or just li ion cheaper types. Is there any one on the Gold coast who could help with wiring up the battery to my e bike? I can travel.

Michael, I am a retired technical officer in Rockhampton with an electric bike.
When you purchased the batteries what were they sold as? What size and capacity is the battery pack? Is the ebike under construction or are you replacing batteries on an existing ebike? Do you have any information on the ebike you currently have ie wiring diagrams? Can you take & email photos etc.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry about the delay. I have an elation bike. Trouble with Elation there is no back up assistance. I have wired up the Li?? batteries and have had a spin around the block. Halfway the motor went into overdrive and the motor would not stop. I pedalled back. [Great exercise] and am now charging the battery. I will take photos on Sat and can email them to you. Some strange odours emanated from the elctricals so I hope I have not cooked anything. On the bike there is a light and an indicator to tell how much charge is left in battery. I am not sure if there is any battery management systems in there. (There is a battery management system in the Li??)

Sounds like the battery voltage may be higher than the bike motor and controller.
Did you get a new charger with the battery or are you using the original one?
Strange odours indicate cooking is taking place. Some cheap chinese lithium battery packs do not have the required built in protection circuity so be very careful during charging.
Hopefully no damage has occurred but wiring and componentry may have been compromised.

I am going to go to Jaycar to see if they can help. The battery indicates that it has charge, so I think I have blown the controller, as you say. I did get a new charger with it 3A. I have put in a complaint to ebay as I did not get any specifications with the battery. Do not buy from conhismotors in China. I will keep you posted. My number is 0409415872 if you want to text your email address. The battery is 36V 12 AH The motor is 200w Thanks Michael

My email is ibikeebike@gmail.com Michael.
I looked at the Elation website and they have 24V models as well. I am assuming the motor is a 36V 200W unit in your case.
This is the worry with buying things from overseas of course. Sometimes cheaper items cost a lot more in the long run.
Happy to help if I can. If you are going to Jaycar make sure you purchase a digital multimeter if you don't already have one.

Thanks again. I went to Jaycar Sat The lad behind the counter said he could not help.
I shall try another store in Bris. I will email photos later to day. I am sure the controller is stuffed. I may have to go to el to get the right gear. It is not as straightforward as one would imagine.Posted Saturday 1 May 2010 @ 8:07:45 pm from IP # -
Hi Michael,
Have you seen/considered the AEVA (Australian Electric Vehicle Association) forums for this discussion? The AEVA forums have lots of very helpful members and are not just for cars, there are useful discussions there about eBikes as well.
See especially the "Scooters, mopeds and electric toys" area under "Techical Discussion"

I have an Elation 200Watt bike kit. It has a 24V LiPO battery. Have you been sent the wrong battery?

Thank you to everyone who has helped on this topic. Thanks to rockabye; I got in touch with Barry at Lancaster Bikes http://www.lancasterbikes.com.au He was really helpful and has fitted another motor and controllers to my bike and I am happy to say it goes really well. I thought the amount he charged me was very reasonable. The performance is great and the bike has a lot of helpful features on it now. The motor is on the back wheel and I get to use all 18 gears if needed. I feel when you buy any technical product one of the most important elements is after sales service and it does not exist at some other resellers.

Glad to here you were able to get back on the road Michael. I thought Barry would be your best bet as he is close to you. That's what the ATA community is all about.
My Lancaster bike is the 24V model with lithium batteries and I've done 500kms so far. I did my longest run this week, a 34km round trip and it performed brilliantly. Would love just a little more grunt on hills but it does the job.
