Hello, I am learning about how to build a simple hempcrete house on Macleay Island, Queensland. Planning permission is not needed from Redland Council if hempcrete is classed as lightweight. The council planner did not know its classification. Does any one know? Thanks! Kit
Is hempcrete classified as a lightweight building material?

Assuming that you are using it as an infill between studs it is lightweight.

Though I think it has reasonably high thermal mass. I’d be careful about using too much thermal mass in your warm coastal environment. If you were further north, say in Cairns, I’d advise against using thermal mass, as it inhibits purging of heat in the evenings.
I’d read up about thermal mass, & what’s recommended, on this great website,

Thank you, d.darroch, I will do so. I know of several hemp houses in the Byron Shire, which is of a similar climate, so I can check in there too.

Critical issue when designing footings and bearers and other load bearing components being mass of hemp Crete when wet and fresh. As it dries it will obviously lighten. But the engineer will sort that.
