I've recently been to a few offices where they have an Aluminium slatted suspended ceiling. There is a black mesh/cloth over the back of the slats presumably to keep dust out. They rely solely on under roof anticon type insulation which probably isn't any better than R1.5-2. Can these ceilings support batts ?

would depend on whether it was allowed for when installing the droppers. The ceilings are normally suspended on droppers. The spacing of these and ratings of them will determine whether it is designed to take extra load or not .thats the technical answer. on the other hand ..theres only one way to find out !!

Thanks Dave. It always seems odd to me when people talk about insulation exceeding the load rating - a batt seems so light and weight spread over a big area !?

I agree but it all depends on how many droppers were used .. often not enough to begin with .
