lick on it each time your heamoglobin gets low.
There is some laquer, but how long will it last?Posted Tuesday 19 Dec 2017 @ 9:31:03 am from IP # -
I haven't seen that edition but im interested in what it looks like. maybe ATA could post the pic?
could it be a typo?
maybe they just learn to love the rust.
maybe it has a fairly tough clear coat over it.
maybe it is oiled or waxed and maintained regularly.
maybe its been seasoned like a steel frypan.
maybe its been blued https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_(steel)The level of success of any of the above can vary enormously. Some may involve chemicals you dont want in a kitchen. If you want to do this I would be buying a few chopping board sized piece and testing them in your current kitchen for 6 - 12 months exposed to all the mess and water and cleaning etc etc that a bench has to live through. Then let us know how it goes.

It was mentioned in Santuary 38 but the house profile was issue 30, neither explain about the steel bench though, other than to mention the material used:
Chris drew on his earlier experience in steelwork to create the dark, mild steel features of the kitchen benchtop, the studio workbench and the simple steel banisters.Posted Wednesday 20 Dec 2017 @ 4:40:48 am from IP # -
I bought a "high carbon" Japanese knife the other week. By gosh they rust as you stand there holding it in your hand! I googled and one tip was to soak the knife in a container of strong cheap instant coffee for 24 hours to accelerate the getting of a patina. I did this and it worked - the blade came out blackened, and far far less reactive (except for some reason there were non-blackened spots, probably from a non-uniform surface coating when it went in the coffee). This combined with regular oiling/polishing of some sort, might work on a bench. I'd want to get the secret formula first before going ahead with it though, otherwise it will turn into big pita.

You all worry to much!
Linseed oil will keep the bench clean and rust free.
If its wiped down regularly, and pools of water are not left it will develop a surface that is not loose.Posted Friday 29 Dec 2017 @ 11:40:50 pm from IP #
