We are retaining a double brick, no cavity wall in our renovation. At the moment it is like this on the inside -

The other side is painted. It is a boundary wall & we only have about 45mm to use on the other side. It faces north-east & gets a lot of sun, we also need acoustic insulation.
Is there a way we could insulate the wall on the outside instead of taking up space on the inside? What materials could we use, to be sealed with something like Acratex?
thanks

About 30 mm of foam with render over the top is about all you would fit.
Would be about R 1 for the foam. If you could also squeeze in a small air gap with foil that would be worthwhile.Might be some fire rating issues with foam on a boundary. Look into that.
If this wall is exposed to the neighbours will it get damaged? Rendered foam isn't the toughest finish.I would make sure the surveyor is 100% certain about that 45mm and knows how close you intend to build to the boundary.
Be extra nice to the neighbour. Talk to them about what you are planning. Give them some colour choice for the wall. Give them wine. They have to live with the wall and give you access to build it.

Thanks, I didnt see this reply. Will check into foam - what sort are you talking about? Yes the neighbours are fine, it's just the certifier we might have problems with!!!

Sorry cant really help with a specific product. There are lots of houses built with a rendered foam exterior and I'm sure many products on the market but i havnt looked into it. I'm sure someone else will chime in, otherwise Google should turn up plenty of options although many will be thicker then you need.

another question
can anyone tell me how much NOTICEABLE difference there would be between R2 and R2.5 for wall thermal & acoustic insulation, and between 230mm deep wall and 250mm wall ?

Thanks - one more question please
We're getting this for the floor (timber over yellow tongue, about a metre above ground at highest point)

E-therm 8mm AG Suspended Timber Floor R 1.2 R 2.8Could you tell me if we would need under floor batts as well? The clay ground does get cold & damp in winter - overhead trees

Have you thought about growing a vine over the wall.
