We have to wait for scientific studies to confirm whether it's true or not.

Compact fluoros, and indeed all fluoros, are rapidly being replaced with LEDs, so this is going to be a non-issue in the next year or two anyway.
But, the amount of mercury in a CFL is tiny compared to the amount of mercury released by a coal fired power station to produce the extra energy required to run an incandescent over the lifespan of a typical CFL. So, localised mercury levels can be higher if you break a bulb, but overall environmental release levels are much lower, even with CFLs, if a reasonable proportion of the energy mix is from coal. And that's not considering the other toxic releases from burning coal, including radioactive materials and numerous organic byproducts.
But really, there is no need to be buying anything other than LEDs nowadays...

The article is a bit alarmist really, even if the information is correct. We've had fluorescent lights for more than 60 years. Most domestic kitchens since I was a kid had fluoros consisting of one or two 40W tubes. Most offices and shops have had fluoro lighting for many decades. If the light from them presented a problem, it would have been very evident long before now. The UV light that they produce, of necessity, is absorbed by the fluorescent coating on the tube. And as for the mercury vapour that they contain, while it is good that they are being phased out, it doesn't cause a problem in a domestic situation. I think I'd be lucky to remember more than one being accidentally broken in my presence, in my lifetime.

Although what's the harm in a little fun?

if the CFLs where to outgas mercury, they would stop working? Would not be surprised, if the Friday flake with chips or the can 'o tuna has more Hq than a fluoro bulb.

Careful with anything from that site (realfarmacy.com)!
It is in the top of the fake news sites. And high on the Conspiracy-Pseudoscience category.

Thanks for that Canyoner. I wasn't aware of those sites, so I've bookmarked them.
I didn't look any further than a glance at the page on the compact fluoros, and what I saw was basically true, but rather overstated. Should have checked some other pages.Posted Tuesday 25 Jul 2017 @ 10:22:20 am from IP # -

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/realfarmacy/Possibly 'fake news sites' are fakes ? Who can tell ? There is a fair amount of 'news' being pedalled to us by main stream media with the convenient label of 'conspiracy'. This in itself is a form of controlling the masses, to provide a 'safe place' for people to house their fear.

Properly operating CFLs don't cause cancer, but they have been shown to trigger lupus flare-ups and headaches in some people.
It's also important to make sure that the coating on the CFL is intact as that is what blocks the UV they produce.
LEDs are more efficient anyway, and don't seem to cause any of the above.
