It's a dusty, frustrating job which is why a lot of people simply put batts on top of the loose fill.
But like you, I decided to try to remove it myself from a Canberra house- luckily a tiled roof with no sarking so just pushed tiles back here and there for access. Problem with vacuums is that they fill up really quickly and filter gets blocked with dust. I rigged up a dust extractor to suck out of a lidded 205 litre (44 gal) feed drum via a 100mm hole with gauze over it on inside of drum and attached another 100mm flexible hose to another hole in drum and then sewer pipe attached to that and more flexible hose in ceiling. It worked okay but pretty slow, lots of trips up and down ladder. I did about 30 sq metres then rang the experts and they did the remaining 120 sq metres for about $900 a couple of years ago. I had fiddled around for several hours and got dusty inside and out, sore and cranky. Just one guy with great set up finished the job in about 2 hours. Wish I'd called him earlier!
Probably worth the money just to remove risks to health. Plus there are disposal problems in some places where they worry that there is some asbestos in it.
