I am building a new house in a bushfire zone. I want ventilation vents along the ridge of a hipped roof. Does anyone know where I can finda roof ridge vent that will keep out embers, rain, insects etc? My architect said she does not know and has to research it!

What's your BAL rating

The BAL rating has not been finalised yet, but I believe it is on the borderline between 19 and 29. But embers from the nearby national park can blow in, so I want to be really secure and assume I will need Bal 29
... It is a metal roof.Posted Friday 19 Dec 2014 @ 1:38:46 am from IP # -
Vents that have 2 separated layers of stainless mesh stop embers, the mesh should be the same mesh size as that used in say spark arresters for diesel engines such as in tractors, it's a much finer mesh compared to fly wire. Obviously they cannot be made from stuff that might burn.

A small piece of the regulations (The absolute minimum requirement)
ROOF VENTILATORS
All components of roof ventilators, including the rotary type, shall be constructed of non-combustible material and shall be sealed against the entry of sparks and embers with corrosion resistant steel or bronze mesh having a maximum aperture size of 1.8 mm.

So you can obtain a suitable regular ventilator and adapt it to suit your situation.
