Pamela, you might like to look at the whirlpool wiki link I put in my post in the following thread.

In addition to a good quality a/c, ceiling fans make a huge difference to summer comfort levels. I have them in all bedrooms & living areas in my home, & combined with curtains & external shading of windows, they significantly reduce the need for more expensive forms of cooling. (weatherboard home, 9' ceilings)

Look at lots of very big, very sleek (ie: not fancied up) ceiling fans and 'night purging', window awnings and thermal curtains if you have sun coming in through windows. It really, really will work.
"High ceilings and large rooms" = lots of $ to cool with air con.

I think you may turn to west lake solar roof solutions ,the only really proforssional manufacture in Asia who do much of contribution in keeping a fresh and warm for private houseonwers ! their solar roof fans the solar heat collectors are the most reliable one in current market ,and help houseowners save a lot of money from the bill of air conditioners !

The other bonus of high ceilings is if you install a ducted fan system to the ceiling to remove the hot air out of th rooms and attic, drawing the cooler air form the southern side of the house- you will maintain a comfortable cool house. If this system is solar powered you will have a cool house for free every day.

Thankyou for your replies CW of NSW, cool@home and Eamon.
I appreciate your efforts.
Yes, ceiling fans and window coverings seem to be cheapest and best option.
I have recently purchased this home and doing a renovation including double glazing.
I will read your sites in depth CW.
thanks
